Can You DIY a Fire Pit / Fireplace?
A built-in masonry fire pit or outdoor fireplace involves gas line work and often structural masonry that requires professional installation. Gas fire features in particular are regulated — connecting a gas line requires a licensed plumber or gas fitter and a permit. Wood-burning fire pits are more DIY-accessible, but built-in masonry fireplaces are almost always a pro job.
This project requires a licensed professional
Requires licensing, specialized equipment, or carries serious safety risk.
The guidance below covers what to expect from the process and how to work effectively with your contractor.
What to Expect from the Process
Many municipalities prohibit open-burning fire pits within a certain distance of structures, property lines, and overhead branches. Gas fire features require a permit in virtually all jurisdictions.
Excavate 6" and fill with compacted gravel for drainage. For heavier masonry fireplaces, pour a reinforced concrete footing 6–8" thick. Let cure 7 days before loading.
A licensed plumber or gas fitter runs a dedicated gas line to the feature location, installs a shutoff valve, and performs a pressure test. All work must be inspected.
Stack fire-rated masonry block, natural stone, or fire brick around the perimeter. Use refractory mortar for the firebox interior — regular mortar cracks under high heat.
A licensed tradesperson installs the gas burner kit, igniter, and glass media or lava rock. Test all connections before backfilling.
Gas features require a final gas inspection. Do not operate until the inspector signs off.
Pro Tips
- Lava rock or fire glass are purely decorative — the fire rating of the burner and liner is what matters for safety
- A gas fire feature with an electronic ignition is far more convenient than manual lighting
- Position the fire pit downwind from the primary seating area based on prevailing winds in your yard
Watch Out For
- ⚠Never use regular concrete blocks or standard brick in a firebox — they can explode when heated. Use fire brick rated for the application.
- ⚠Gas line DIY is illegal — period. A gas leak near an open flame is a life safety issue.
- ⚠Check setback requirements — most codes require 10+ feet from any structure or combustible material
Why You Need a Pro
- →Any gas-connected fire feature — legally required
- →Built-in masonry outdoor fireplaces — too heavy and complex for most DIYers
- →Any feature requiring a permit and inspections (which is almost all built-in fire features)
