Tips & Notes
- •3"–4" of compacted DG is standard for paths and patios.
- •Stabilized DG with a binder holds up better to foot traffic and rain.
- •DG compacts significantly — loose DG will reduce to about 75% of its original volume.
- •Most popular in the Southwest and California where it blends with natural landscapes.

Frequently asked questions
How much decomposed granite do I need for a patio?▾
A 200 sq ft DG patio at 3" compacted depth needs about 1.85 cubic yards loose (DG compacts ~25%). Order 2.5 cubic yards to allow for compaction loss and edges. Most installers compact in 1.5" lifts for the best finish.
Should I use stabilized or unstabilized DG?▾
Stabilized DG includes a resin binder that hardens into a semi-solid surface — best for paths, patios, and ADA-compliant surfaces. Unstabilized DG is cheaper and stays loose — fine for decorative beds but rutts under traffic.
What's the difference between DG and crushed gravel?▾
Decomposed granite is naturally weathered granite that breaks down into a fine, sandy mix with small angular pebbles. Crushed gravel is mechanically broken stone with cleaner sizing. DG compacts to a smooth path-like surface; crushed gravel stays loose.
Does DG need edging?▾
Yes — without edging DG migrates into lawns and beds. Use steel edging, concrete curbs, or natural stone borders 3"–4" tall. Edging also helps maintain a clean compaction line so the path doesn't crumble at the perimeter.
How much does decomposed granite cost?▾
Bulk DG runs $40–$80/cubic yard delivered ($25–$50/ton) in the Southwest where it's quarried locally. East Coast pricing can reach $100–$150/yard due to shipping. Stabilized DG with binder adds $20–$50/yard.
