Frequently asked questions
How many tons of gravel do I need for a driveway?▾
A standard 12'×40' driveway at 4" depth is 160 sq ft of coverage × 0.33 ft = 5.3 cubic yards. At ~1.4 tons per cubic yard, that's about 7.5 tons. Order 8 tons to allow for compaction and edges.
How much area does 1 ton of gravel cover?▾
1 ton of gravel covers roughly 80–100 sq ft at 2" depth, or 50–65 sq ft at 4" depth. Exact coverage depends on stone size and density — pea gravel covers more area than river rock per ton.
What's the difference between #57 stone, crusher run, and pea gravel?▾
#57 is clean 3/4" crushed stone — drains well, used for base and drainage. Crusher run includes fines and packs hard — used for driveways. Pea gravel is small (1/4"–3/8") and rounded — used for paths and decorative coverage, but shifts underfoot.
How deep should gravel be for a driveway?▾
Plan on 4"–6" of compacted gravel for residential driveways: 2"–3" of #2 or crusher run base, topped with 2"–3" of #57 or finishing stone. Heavy truck driveways need 6"–8" total.
How much does gravel cost in 2026?▾
Bulk gravel runs $25–$65/cubic yard delivered ($15–$45/ton). Pea gravel and decorative stones cost $40–$120/yard. Delivery fees are typically $50–$150 and not included in the per-yard price.
